Claire Coles

The designer Claire Coles has recently been an influence on me, by her beautifully crafted pieces of work from a range of: Interior design, mixed media, stitched vintage wallpaper & ceramics.

Claire Coles creates her wallpaper designs from charity shops, ranging from flock acid to floral patterns. She then cuts out the different styles of floral patterns and machine stitches them back into the paper florals. She does this to recreate different textures and patterns; I think that Clare Cole's work is very delicate and intricate.

Her teacups look weathered and used by her use of textures on surfaces and i'm also inspired by the different ways Claire Coles has incorporated her drawings into stitch, I think this gives depth to her work.

Her wallpaper designs are really interesting and detailed pieces, using mixed media to create her wallpapers and interiors. I also really like her Ceramic collection of porcelain slip cast tea sets that were based on the theme of British tradition of ‘Afternoon Tea’, each of the cups and saucer are hand embroidered with florals. I think it’s interesting how Claire Coles again experimented with texture and the idea of teacups; I also like how the florals look like they have grown onto the surface of the porcelain cups.
